Members of the Auckland Bail Support Services team recently ventured out in the torrential rain to volunteer at Everybody Eats, a not-for-profit restaurant.

Everybody Eats is a pay-as-you-feel dining concept, taking perfectly good ingredients that would otherwise go to waste and turning them into three course meals. Customers pay whatever they can afford, which enables people experiencing food poverty to be able to access restaurant quality meals. By inviting anyone and everyone to join together for a meal at shared tables in a welcoming space, the concept brings communities together, allowing people to get to know each other and build trust.

Despite the weather, it was still a very busy experience for the team who took on kitchen and front of house roles. Some of their tasks included greeting and seating customers, plating and tasting food, cleaning, and prepping meals for the next day.

Lead Bail Support Officer Claudine says it was a fulfilling way to contribute to reducing food waste, food poverty and social isolation in New Zealand.

“We learnt and enjoyed having to be responsive to changing environments,” she says. “It was great to be able to experience serving the community in a purely unselfish way, working in a fast-paced environment - and not being the boss in the kitchen!”
