Today is International Nurses Day, and we would like to celebrate some of the incredible nurses at Corrections.

Originally from the Philippines, Tell is a Registered Nurse at Waikeria Prison and will celebrate 10 years with Corrections in June. Before immigrating to New Zealand, Tell worked in a provincial hospital in the Philippines where he was assigned to various departments and wards, but mostly specialised in emergency, obstetrics and gynaecology, and surgical care. His first nursing job in New Zealand was at an aged care facility caring for people with dementia.

“What I love about working in a prison is the variety. No two days are ever the same,” says Tell. “We are a nurse-led service, so there’s a lot of autonomy in our practice. We take the lead in providing primary healthcare for people in prison.”

Tell says he’s just one part of a well-oiled machine and couldn’t do the work he does without the support of the people he works with. “I work with an amazing group of healthcare professionals. We’re a tight-knit team and working together through the busy and sometimes stressful times of the pandemic has brought us even closer together,” he says.

“So, for International Nurses Day, I would like to recognise and thank our team for their support and the great work they do in providing high-quality health care to the men at Waikeria Prison.”
