Corrections staff have been assisting local communities during lockdown with deliveries of fresh food for people in need.
Rolleston Prison is a major contributor of fresh produce to the Christchurch City Mission in Ōtautahi and individual families, with around five bins of vegetables being donated weekly. Christchurch Women’s Prison regularly supports local foodbanks, and during lockdown were able to supply a large number of pumpkins and eggs from prison chickens.
People in prison have appreciated the opportunity to support the community during a difficult time.
“Our gardens give them a chance to work in a group setting and to give something back to the community,” says Assistant Prison Director, Grant “the gardeners take pride in the produce they have a hand in producing. They can see how hard COVID is impacting the community and are really pleased to be able to make their contribution.”
