Waikeria celebrates Tangata Moana
“Hold fast to your culture that is your crown”.
In the heart of Waikeria Prison, a vibrant spirit pulsed with the rhythms of Pasifika culture. After a series of language weeks celebrating the rich diversity of the Pacific islands, the Pasifika Network decided it was time to come together for a grand cultural day—an event that would resonate with pride.
The day began with the beating of the pasifika drums and the sound of the conch shells as the parade of culture and unity took place. Entering the hall staff members were captivated by the beautiful adornment of traditional tapestry and Tapa. The theme of the celebration was ‘hold fast to our culture; they are our crowns’ “each of us have a unique narrative, a story that deserves to be told and celebrated” says chairperson Jay Sititi.
Each Pasifika nation had the opportunity to showcase their beauty and how their culture, woven into the fibre’s of their DNA makes them who they are. Traditional songs and dances echoed and told a story, a true display of pride and joy in the ability to share the experience of Pasifika culture with each and every single person present.
An umu demonstration showed the artistry of cooking in the earth oven. The earthy aromas of taro, meats, and vegetables filled the air as staff explained the traditional methods, sharing their knowledge. All gathered around, staff were captivated by the process.
Ex staff member, and one of the pioneers of the network Sosefo Bourke likened the day to a script from ‘Moana’ “No one goes beyond the reef”. “Today resembled a new generation of staff going beyond the reef. It was also a formal launch of the next discovered reef. The learnings from that will be used to do better/differently and respectfully” continued Sosefo.
With hearts full and spirits high, the staff left the celebration with a renewed commitment to carry forward the stories and traditions of their Pasifika heritage. The cultural day had not only highlighted their unique identities but had also forged deeper connections within the Waikeria community, creating a legacy of unity that would resonate for years to come.
