Our priorities

Keeping our communities safe

Corrections has a uniquely wide range of safety risks. Not only do we manage some of the most dangerous people in New Zealand, but many of our offenders are highly vulnerable. We are also involved in a wide range of prison industries, ranging from dairy farming to construction. Our approach to safety must appropriately balance the needs of the people in our care with the safety and security of the public and our custodial environments.

Changing lives

Rehabilitation programmes are the best opportunity we have to impact the drivers of crime. By delivering rehabilitation we can directly reduce re-offending and the number of people re-entering the system. Post-sentence, we work to support reintegration into the community. We know that offenders who lack support are more likely to re-offend, be re-convicted, and be re-imprisoned.
