International Nurses Day on May 12th was a chance to acknowledge and celebrate all nurses and staff in our healthcare team.

People like Norman, the Health Centre Manager at Northland Region Corrections Facility. He’s been nursing since 1996, spending the majority of his time in Accident and Emergency facilities in hospitals before starting as a nurse with Corrections in 2012. While a very different environment, Norman says there are some similarities between the two.

“You don’t see the same day twice in prison so you definitely don’t get bored,” he says.

“I find it a very rewarding job. There are challenges, but it’s all worth it when you make a difference in someone’s life.

"I’d recommend it if you have a desire to help people and see change,” says Norman.

Nurses at Corrections work in a nurse-led, close-knit team within health centres in prison. Their work is rewarding and diverse, across a range of specialities, including long-term condition management, health education, emergency response, and more.

Thank you to all our nurses and healthcare staff who work hard every day!
