Community Work Supervisor: The Real Job
A community work supervisor isn’t just a supervisor: You’re a teacher, a mentor, an unofficial counsellor.
You’re the kind of person who notices the little things – who’s walking in different today, the subtle shift in someone’s tone. You’re observant and alert, with your heart in the right place and eyes in the back of your head.
Nothing rattles you – you stay calm when the pressure is on. You bring integrity and empathy along with you every day, even the challenging ones. You’re not here to judge and you lead by example, willing to listen, relate, and offer advice. You can handle tough conversations when needed and build trust with the people around you.
You’re a strong role model and motivational leader, relentlessly positive, resilient and patient.
Community work supervisors support individuals serving community work sentences to contribute to meaningful projects, make a positive impact, and gain new skills. They work with a range of not-for-profit organisations across the country, making a real contribution to their local area.
Managing work teams of up to eight people, they need to be organised, communicate clearly and able to teach people how to use tools correctly. They create a safe and non-judgemental environment, ensuring people feel at ease to talk and share as they work.
When people are engaged and feel valued, they’re more likely work together constructively as a team to complete a project. Community work supervisors prioritise respect and building relationships with people they supervise and the wider community.
