One part of a complex justice system
The Department of Corrections is one part of a larger, complex justice system, which involves a number of agencies that work together:
-
It starts with the police who investigate crimes and, when needed, arrest and charge people with offences
-
Once charges are made, the courts, supported by the Ministry of Justice determine whether someone is guilty and decide on the appropriate sentence
-
If someone is convicted, that’s where Corrections comes in – we manage people either in prison or the community, based on decisions made by the courts or the parole board
Our work is about creating opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration, focusing on reducing reoffending to make New Zealand safer. This can include education, job training, as well as mental health and addiction services. We provide structure and support to help people build skills for a crime-free future.
We collaborate with a range of agencies across the justice system, including the New Zealand Parole Board, Oranga Tamariki, and Crown Law. And it’s not just government agencies who contribute to the justice system – iwi, community providers, whānau and everyday New Zealanders all play a role, whether it’s offering support or creating opportunities.

Working together is what we do best – and you can be part of that important work. At Corrections, there are many ways to contribute to a safer, more inclusive New Zealand. From frontline roles like corrections officers, who work directly with people in prison, to specialist positions such as psychologists and health professionals, as well as supporting services including finance, administration and communication.
Working at Corrections means joining an organisation with a clear purpose: the wellness and well-being of people. We make the community safer by supporting people to leave us better and with brighter prospects.
