Psychologist: The Real Job
As a corrections psychologist, you are someone who sees beyond the surface. You offer a calm presence, sharp thinking and genuine empathy – supporting individuals to develop life skills and management strategies, so that they’re better equipped to face some of the challenges that life provides.
You’re passionate about making a positive impact to the lives of people in your care, as well as the people around them. You don’t come here thinking you can change people; you help them change themselves. You gain their trust, make connections, and help them open up and own their past behaviours.
You care less about what people have done to get here, and more about what you can do to support them – you see the person in front of you, not what is on their record. You are understanding but not condoning, caring but not coddling – and you don’t judge people.
A psychologist at Corrections is resilient and adaptable, working with people in prison as well as people serving sentences in the community to help rehabilitation and reintegration into society. It’s a unique environment, engaging with a population of people that come with complexities and challenges that aren’t seen in other organisations.
They work in a safe and supported environment with a large psychological service team to get the best outcome for the people they treat. They also collaborate with other teams across Corrections, including probation officers and prison staff, so clear communication and teamwork skills are an important part of the job.
They aren’t just dealing with offending – they’re dealing with the whole person. Corrections psychologists get to use a full breadth of skills and tools, continuously growing and developing in a diverse and rewarding role. There are multiple pathways for career progression and specialisation, as well as opportunities for research and innovation.
